A new economic activity spun from sugarcane
Kanya has created new forms of activity around sugarcane in Batangas (at the south of the Island of Luzon), where farming communities harvest the crop six months a year.
In its commitment to support sugarcane-dependent communities, Kanya has set in motion an innovative upcycling process that turns the residue of plant into the raw material of a high-end natural fabric.
By doing so, 40 men & women can make an honest living for the remainder of the year by generating sustainable income for them and their families from what was mere residue, now transformed into fabric material.
Employment for a brighter future
The social impact of the project is in the upskilling of farmers providing the opportunity for them to be artisans. Not only has this brought about a new value for sugarcane but it spotlights the traditional savoir faire of a creative and committed community.
Kanya allocates 100% of its sales to the wellbeing of this community, by purchasing raw material from the farmers in the vicinity, building the capacities and providing decent wages to the hired artisans engaged in the manufacturing process.
